Everyday the 350 students at Nyota Ing’arayo are fed breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is a hearty porridge and lunch consists of a protein like beans or pojo and a filling side like rice or ugali.
The students coming to Nyota often have to walk a long way from home in the heat of Mombasa and it can be quite a difficult journey. To go home for lunch is not only exhausting, but many students will arrive at home to find that there is no food in the house. For some students, the lunch meal at school is the only meal of the day.
Maintaining the feeding program is of the utmost importance to the staff at Nyota. Since the program is entirely donor funded, it is a challenge to maintain. The operating costs include the wages of two cooks, all of the food and of the sundries required for preparation.
